About

Jess Groopman

Emerging Technology Analyst & Innovation Advisor

For 15 years, I’ve conducted research to help organizations around the world analyze how new technologies impact humans, business, society, and the environment.

I’m Director of Digital Strategy & Innovation at Intentional Futures, a research, strategy, and design firm based on Seattle, WA. There I lead a team that works with organizations to develop long-term innovation strategies that align economic, societal, and environmental benefit.

I founded Kaleido Insights, a boutique research and advisory firm based in San Francisco, CA which analyzes the impacts of over 30 emerging technologies. We work with innovative organizations across industries to transform the kaleidoscope of technological disruption into clear, actionable strategies.

I am a regular keynote speaker, moderator, and panelist at emerging technology industry events. I’ve delivered over 50 talks on dozens of topics, to a range of stakeholders from executives, investors, and engineers to marketers, parents, and students. I’m also a professionally trained voice-over artist.

My research spans a wide range of technological, cultural, and business trends. I’ve authored over 50 reports in my career, across dozens of technologies, industries, and demographics. I’ve written hundreds of articles, contributed to four books and a textbook, run my own podcast, and been featured in dozens of international media outlets.

I specialize in analyzing how data and technologies are shifting human behaviors and can scale business to generate positive impact on society and planet.

I’m committed to advancing sustainable and inclusive innovation. My approach starts with principle of Interconnectedness and applies systems thinking, macro-environmental analysis and qualitative assessment across diverse stakeholders.

I am honored to be included among 100 Women in AI Ethics, Women in Blockchain, and on Onalytica’s list of the 100 Most Influential Thought Leaders in IoT. I am also a contributing member of the International IoT Council, the IEEE’s Internet of Things Group, and FC Business Intelligence’s IoT Nexus Advisory Board. My research has been covered by USA Today, Forbes, Huffington Post, AdAge, FastCompany, Entrepreneur, VentureBeat, and more.

My professional experience includes time at several other research firms: principal analyst with Tractica (now Informa), research director and principal analyst with Harbor Research; industry analyst with Altimeter Group (now Prophet); director at Focus Research (now Ziff Davis) and was a lead research analyst at Tippit Research. Before working in business and technology research, my experience was more in academic anthropological field work in ethnographic, linguistic, and archaeological research both in the United States and abroad.

When I’m not researching technology and its (past, present, and future!) impact on humans, I wear several other hats. I’m a wife, sister, daughter, and friend. I’m a rock/jazz/funk drummer who swings as hard as I rock. I speak Spanish, am actively learning French. I adore learning about new cultures and unlearning my own. I’m an east coaster who ventured west, with a particular love for adventure and travel. I’m an award-winning class clown with a very serious core. I’m a runner, a yogi, a chef, paleoanthropology nerd, animal lover, and optimist.
